Mechanical Test of Melted Glass-Mechanical Testing-

Test Background

Fused glass refers to the glass formed by using low melting point glass powder to form a slurry and sintering and solidifying it. Fusion-sealed glass is easy to bond with metals, ceramics and other materials and is airtight. When a sealed cavity is formed, it can achieve high airtightness. It is also non-flammable, has good heat resistance, and has superior electrical properties.
Therefore, as an inorganic solder, it is widely used in vacuum and electronic products. The mechanical test of fused glass can measure the elastic modulus, shear modulus, Poisson's ratio, flexural strength, sealing bonding mechanical strength and sealing bonding shear strength of fused glass.

Scope of tests

Fused glass can be divided into two categories according to its structure:
1) One type is crystalline glass, whose structure is a mixture of crystalline and amorphous forms, and its appearance is white, opaque or translucent depending on the degree of crystallization;
2) The other type is amorphous glass, which has an amorphous structure and a transparent appearance.

Test method

1. Sealing bond tensile strength
Place the specimen in the fixture. The width of the fixture should be the same as the width of the specimen, and ensure that there is no friction when the cross specimen is placed in the fixture. The contact area between the upper clamp and the sample should be padded with a soft gasket to ensure uniform contact between the upper clamp and the sample. The indenter of a universal material testing machine is used to directly load the upper clamp. The upper clamp transmits symmetrical pressure to the left and right sides of the lower glass strip of the cross specimen to achieve uniform tensile stress on the sealing bonding surface. The loading speed is 0.5 mm/min. During the test, the maximum load value at which the bonded surface breaks under tension is recorded.
2. Sealing bond shear strength
Place the specimen in the lower fixture. The width of the clamp should be the same as the thickness of the specimen, and the cross specimen should be placed in the clamp without any friction. The contact area between the indenter and the upper end of the upright glass spline should be padded with a soft gasket to ensure uniform contact between the upper indenter and the sample. The indenter of a universal material testing machine is used to directly load the upper end of the upright glass spline at a loading speed of 0.5 mm/min to achieve uniform shear stress on the sealing bonding surface. During the test, the maximum load value at which the bonded surface sheared and fractured was recorded.
