Test Background
Cross-grain tensile strength refers to the maximum ability of wood to withstand tensile loads perpendicular to the fiber direction. Generally, it is only about 3.5%-7% of the tensile strength along the grain, among which the tensile strength in the radial direction is slightly greater than that in the chord direction. The cross-grain tensile strength test of wood can determine the cross-grain tensile strength of a small sample of wood without defects.

Scope of tests
Wood can be divided into:
according to how it is used
1) Wood restructured materials such as plywood, particleboard, fiberboard, laminated veneer lumber, laminated lumber, restructured wood, oriented strand board, restructured decorative veneer, etc.
2) Wood-based composite materials such as gypsum particleboard, cement particleboard, wood/plastic composite materials, wood/metal composite materials, wood conductive materials and wood ceramics.
Test method
Along the cross-grain direction of the sample, apply tensile force at a uniform speed until failure, and obtain the cross-grain tensile strength of the wood.
1) Measure the width and thickness in the middle of the effective part of the sample to the nearest 0.1 mm.
2) Place the sample vertically in the clamping device of the testing machine, and clamp the narrow surface of the part with a spiral clamp.
3) The test is loaded at a uniform speed, and the sample is destroyed within 1.5 min~2.0 min. Failure load is accurate to 10 N.
4) If the breaking point is not in the effective part of the specimen, the test results should be discarded.
5) After the sample test, immediately cut off a section of the effective part, and measure the moisture content of the sample according to GB/T`1931.
