Test Background
The Vickers hardness test for metallic materials is a test used to measure the hardness of metallic materials, especially thin sections of metal and small parts. It consists of a diamond indenter and a light load, used to create indentations on the object being measured. The depth of the indentation is converted into the hardness value of the object. The smaller the indentation, the harder the object.
Likewise, if the indentation is large, the material lacks hardness. This test is used by many industries to determine the correct type of materials to use for operations and machinery. Materials with satisfactory hardness should be selected according to the intended use.

Scope of tests
Metal materials are divided into ferrous metals and non-ferrous metals. The ferrous metals include iron, copper, manganese and steel.
Non-ferrous metals include tin alloys, aluminum alloys, magnesium alloys, copper alloys, aluminum alloys and zinc alloys.
Test method
1. Press the right square pyramidal diamond indenter with the two opposite surfaces at the top with specified angles into the sample surface with a certain test force. After maintaining for the specified time, remove the test force and measure the diagonal length of the indentation on the sample surface.
2. The Vickers hardness value is proportional to the quotient of the test force divided by the indentation surface area. The indentation is regarded as an ideal shape with a square base surface and the same angle as the indenter.
