Sand and Dust Testing of Marine Equipment

Sand and Dust Testing of Marine Equipment-Reliability Testing-

Test Background

The main purpose of the sand and dust test is to evaluate the ability of the equipment to prevent sand and dust penetration in a sand and dust environment, so as to ensure that the equipment is not corroded by sand and dust during storage and operates normally and reliably.
Zhongke Testing Environmental Reliability Experiment Center has various ship equipment environmental test equipment and has various sand and dust test capabilities. It provides professional ship equipment sand and dust test services for ship open-air equipment, ship electrical products, lubricant blocked channels and other equipment.

Environmental Effects

1. Sand and dust cause damage and severe corrosion to open-air equipment on ships
When ship equipment is in transit or when some ships sail in windy and sandy seas, the impact of wind and sand is more obvious. Such phenomena as corrosion of electrical insulators, stains on exposed parts of equipment, peeling off of equipment coatings, hairy windshields and pits.
2. Contaminated lubricants block the holes and cause moving parts to get stuck
The phenomenon of sand and dust contaminating lubricants also occurs from time to time. Due to the penetration effect of dust particles, some equipment is often blocked and cannot be used, causing the moving parts of some internal combustion engine instruments to become stuck and damaged.
3. Seriously affect the electrical performance of the equipment
Some electrical products such as relays and switches deteriorate the circuit contacts due to sand and dust accumulation and abrasion, causing sparking, damage to the insulation performance and even short circuits.
4. Observe performance deterioration
Windy and sandy weather reduces visibility, and sand and dust particles often adhere to optical and observation instrument surfaces, seriously affecting observation.
5. Sand and dust can become the core of water vapor condensation and promote the growth of corrosion and mold.
6. The impact of sand particles on metal conductors will generate static charges.

Type of test

The sand and dust test is divided into three test methods: cyclic dust fall, free dust fall and sand blowing.
Cyclic dust reduction test: The dust used in the test is talcum powder.
Free dust fall test: The test dust is divided into two categories: A and B: Category A is composed of 97% inorganic minerals and 3% cotton fiber; Category B is composed entirely of inorganic minerals and trace natural impurities.
Sand blowing test: The sand used in the sand blowing test is quartz sand.
