PFAS Testing

PFOS is the English abbreviation of perfluorooctane sulfonate, which is widely used in the production of surface antifouling treatment agents for textiles, leather products, furniture and carpets. PFOA is the English abbreviation of perfluorooctanoate. It is widely used in surface treatment of household products (such as non-stick cookware), convenience food packaging, anti-stick stain material fibers and fire-proof foam.

Research shows that POFA is a liver carcinogen with moderate toxicity and can increase the risk of cancer in humans; PFOS does not degrade in the environment or in the body, and has strong bioaccumulation. It can cause various toxicities such as fat metabolism disorder, energy metabolism disorder, induction of peroxidation products, and embryotoxicity. Investigations have shown that PFCs pollution, mainly PFOA and PFOS, is widely present in the bodies and environment of occupationally exposed people to PFOA and PFOS, the general population and wild animals.
At present, some developed countries and non-governmental organizations have paid attention to the possible harm caused by PFOA to the environment and human health.

The European Union's "Directive on Restricting the Sales and Use of Perfluorooctane Sulfonate," referred to as the PFOS Directive, officially came into effect on June 27, 2008. According to the directive, the content of PFOS perfluorooctane sulfonate in finished products sold on the EU market cannot exceed 0.005% of the total mass.
The U.S. EPA has proposed a PFOA Stewardship Plan (PFOA Independent Reduction Plan), which will reduce PFOA emissions by 95% by 2010 and 100% by 2015, which is zero emissions.
The PoHS draft proposed by the Norwegian Pollution Control Authority (SFT) also clearly limits the application of PFOA to 50ppm.
