Test Background
Phenol yellowing refers to the yellowing of phenolic compounds when exposed to nitrogen oxides, causing artificial leather and synthetic leather materials to turn yellow. Since artificial leather and synthetic leather fabrics, especially light-colored fabrics, will add phenolic antioxidants during processing, some phenolic antioxidants can undergo complex chemical reactions with nitrogen oxides to produce yellowing, affecting the appearance and failing to meet customer needs. The Artificial Leather Potential Phenol Yellowing Test determines the likelihood or ability of artificial leather to undergo phenol yellowing.

Scope of tests
1. Classification according to the synthetic resin used: polyvinyl chloride artificial leather, polyamide artificial leather, polyolefin artificial leather, polyurethane artificial leather.
2. Classified by base material: cotton cloth-based artificial leather, synthetic fiber-based artificial leather and fiber-based artificial leather.
3. Classification by production method: direct coating and scraping method artificial leather, transfer coating and scraping method artificial leather, calendering and laminating method artificial leather, extrusion laminating method artificial leather, rotary screen coating method artificial leather, wet method artificial leather.
4. Classification by use: Artificial leather can be divided into two categories: civil use and industrial use.
Civilian leather includes: leather for shoe covers, leather for clothes, leather for boxes, straw for bags, leather for handbags, leather for gloves and carts, straw for furniture, etc. Industrial leather includes: vehicle leather, floor leather, etc.
Test method
Each sample and the standard control cloth were sandwiched in test paper containing 2,6-di-tert-butyl-4-nitrophenol, placed between different glass plates and stacked together, wrapped tightly with a polyethylene film that does not contain phenolic compounds to form a sandwich combination sample, and placed in an oven for a certain period of time under the specified pressure.
Use the gray sample card for stain assessment to evaluate the yellowing grade of the sample to evaluate the possibility of the sample producing phenol yellowing.
