Test on freeze-thaw resistance of building thermal insulation products

Test on freeze-thaw resistance of building thermal insulation products-Physical Performance Testing-

Test Background

Freeze-thaw resistance is the ability of a product to resist repeated immersion and freezing, measured by changes in water absorption and compression properties. The freeze-thaw resistance test of building thermal insulation products can determine the impact of continuous cycle conditions on the mechanical properties and moisture content of the products. The cycle conditions range from dry conditions at -20°C to immersion conditions at 20°C.
The purpose of the freeze-thaw resistance test is to simulate the effects of freeze-thaw on insulation products that are frequently exposed to water and low temperatures, such as inverted roofs and insulation products that are underground and unprotected.
Zhongke Testing Reliability Experiment Center has the capability of reliability testing of various building insulation products, and provides professional reliability testing services such as freeze-thaw resistance performance testing for building insulation products.

Scope of tests

Inorganic fibrous products: asbestos products, mineral wool products, glass wool products, ceramic fiber products
Inorganic granular products: expanded vermiculite products, expanded perlite products
Inorganic porous products: diatomite products, microporous calcium silicate products, foam glass products, foam concrete and aerated concrete products

Test method

The sample undergoes 300 continuous cycles from drying conditions at -20°C to immersion conditions at 20°C. The freeze-thaw resistance is measured through changes in the water absorption of the sample and changes in compressive strength or stress.
The test requires the cooperation of any of the following long-term water absorption tests:
a) Diffusion method water absorption test according to ISO16536;
b) Total immersion water absorption test according to ISO16535. The choice of water absorption test methods a) and/or b) is given in the relevant product standard depending on the application. Freezing and thawing tests were conducted in air and water respectively.

Test standard:

GB/T 33011-2016 Thermal insulation products for buildings - Determination of freeze-thaw resistance
ISO 16546: 2020 Thermal insulation products for buildings - Determination of freeze-thaw resistance
ISO 16535 Thermal insulation products for buildings. Long-term water absorption test by immersion method
ISO 16536 Thermal insulation products for buildings Diffusion method testing long-term water absorption
ISO 29469 Thermal insulation products for building use Determination of compression properties
EN 12091-2013 Thermal insulation products for buildings - Determination of freeze-thaw resistance
