Test Background

The Brinell hardness test of metallic materials calculates the hardness value based on the load per unit surface area of the indentation. It is not suitable for measuring materials with higher hardness. The diameter of the indenter used in the Brinell hardness test is larger and the indentation left on the surface of the sample is also larger. The obtained hardness value reflects the average performance of the material in a wide range.
Due to the large indentation, the data obtained are stable and highly repeatable. The Brinell hardness test causes greater damage to the metal surface and is not easy to test the hardness of workpieces that are too thin, nor is it suitable for measuring the hardness of finished parts.

Scope of tests

Brinell hardness application range: testing steel, cast iron, non-ferrous alloys, etc. in various annealed states, and also used to test mechanical parts that have been quenched and tempered and have a hardness less than HBW650.

Test method

1. Apply a test force F to a tungsten carbide alloy ball of a certain diameter D and press it into the surface of the sample. After the specified holding time, remove the test force and measure the diameter d of the indentation on the surface of the sample.
2. Brinell hardness is proportional to the test force divided by the indentation surface area. The indentation is regarded as a sphere with a certain radius after unloading, and the surface area of the indentation is calculated according to the formula through the average diameter of the indentation and the diameter of the indenter.
Generally speaking, the softer the material, the larger the indentation diameter and the lower the Brinell hardness value. On the contrary, the Brinell hardness value is higher. Brinell hardness is commonly represented by the symbol HB. For materials with a Brinell hardness between 450 and 650, the indenter uses a carbide ball, and the hardness value is expressed in HBW.
