Thermal aging test for plastics-Reliability Testing-

Test Background

Degradable plastics exposed to thermal environments may undergo a variety of physical and chemical changes. The length of exposure and the temperature determine the extent and type of changes that occur. A short exposure period to high temperature is usually sufficient to shorten the induction period of oxidatively degradable plastics, a process in which antioxidants and plasticizers are depleted. Physical properties such as tensile strength, impact strength, elongation, and modulus may cause changes during the induction period; however, these changes are usually not due to a decrease in molecular weight, but are simply a response to changes in temperature, such as an increase in crystallinity or a decrease in volatiles, or both.
Plastic thermal aging test can measure its thermal aging performance and is suitable for various plastic products.

Scope of tests

Plastic products or components are mainly divided into:
1. According to the molding method and product structure, it can be divided into compression molded products, blow molded products, and extrusion molded products.
2. According to different raw materials, it can be divided into polypropylene, polyvinyl chloride, polyethylene products, etc.
3. According to the classification of geometric shapes and uses, plastic shoes, wires, plastic containers, cables, etc. are common in daily necessities. In the production industry, there are plastic industrial parts and other products. In education, there are also plastic products for culture, education, and sports.

Test method

Method A: Gravity convection thermal aging test chamber—recommended for thin specimens with a nominal thickness of no more than 0.25 mm.
Method B: Forced-ventilation thermal aging test chamber—recommended for specimens with a nominal thickness greater than 0.25 mm.
