Test Background
The main effects of the salt spray environment on marine instruments include: chemical reactions such as corrosion and electrical corrosion; surface deterioration; increased conductivity; increased contact resistance, etc. These effects can lead to increased wear, mechanical failure, electrical failure and other malfunctions of marine instruments.
The marine instrument salt spray test can evaluate the ability of marine instruments and components to resist salt spray corrosion and the impact of salt spray on the performance and function of marine instruments and components.

Scope of tests
Marine instruments are classified according to different environmental conditions of use and are divided into four categories:
1. Instruments for shore stations: such as marine instruments installed and used on coastal stations, offshore fixed platforms and islands.
2. Instruments for ships and buoys: such as marine instruments used on various types of ships, buoys and other mobile offshore platforms.
3. Underwater instruments: such as marine instruments or sensors used in seawater.
4. Satellite and aeronautical instruments: The environmental testing of such instruments should adopt other environmental testing standards based on the characteristics of the environmental conditions in which they are used.
Test conditions
1. Salt solution
The marine instrument salt spray test uses sodium chloride (chemically pure and above) and distilled water to prepare a salt solution with a concentration of 4.9% to 5.1% (mass fraction). The pH of the salt solution should be between 6.5 and 7.2 at 35°C, which can be measured with a pH meter or precision pH test paper. The pH value of the salt solution can be adjusted with chemically pure or above dilute hydrochloric acid or sodium hydroxide.
2. Test temperature and test humidity
The test temperature in the spray stage is (35±2)℃, the test temperature in the humid heat stage is (40±2)℃, and the relative humidity is (93±3)%.
3. Sedimentation rate
Adjust the sedimentation rate of the salt spray so that the collection volume of the horizontal collection area with an area of 80 cm2 is 1mL/h~2 mL/h at any position of the collector in the effective space of the salt spray test chamber (room) or compound salt spray test chamber (room).
4. Test cycle
A standard test cycle for marine instrument salt spray testing is 24 hours, with 8 hours of spraying followed by 16 hours of moist heat storage. Unless otherwise specified, the number of cycles of the salt spray test is selected from the following values: a) 2; b) 4; c) 6; d) 10.
