Different ozone depleting substances ODS have different depletion capabilities of the ozone layer. When they escape into the atmosphere and gradually diffuse from low altitude (troposphere) to high altitude (troposphere), some perchlorofluorocarbons do not change in the troposphere, but in the troposphere, they are decomposed by short-wave ultraviolet radiation, which triggers a reaction that destroys the ozone layer.
And some hydrogen-containing chlorofluorocarbons have interacted with HO abundant in the atmosphere in the troposphere. Free radical decomposition reactions occur. They do not live long in the stratosphere, so only a small number can diffuse into the ozone layer. The ability to destroy the ozone layer is also greatly reduced. In order to express and compare their ability to ozone, the concept of ozone depletion potential (English name: Ozone depletion potential, referred to as ODP) is adopted. Using CFC-11 as the benchmark comparator, its ODP value is set to 1. The ODP value of other substances is expressed by the fractional value whose ozone depletion capacity is greater or smaller than that of CFC-11.
