Paint and varnish adhesion test

The paint and varnish adhesion test can be carried out on single-coat or multi-coat systems of paint, varnish or related products to measure the adhesion. It is suitable for a variety of substrates, and different steps are used for different types of substrates. Deformable substrates, such as thin metals, plastics, and wood; rigid substrates, such as thick concrete slabs and metal panels.
For certain applications, coatings can be prepared directly on the test column surface.

Color paint is divided into primer and topcoat: primer is divided into primer, putty, mid-coat, sealer, anti-rust paint, etc.; topcoat is divided into enamel paint, special topcoat, etc.
The paint and film of varnish are transparent and are divided into ester varnish, shellac varnish, phenolic varnish, alkyd varnish, acrylic varnish, polyester varnish, high-performance varnish, fluorocarbon varnish, etc.

1. The test sample or system is applied with uniform thickness on a flat plate with a consistent surface structure.
2. After the coating system is dry/cured, use adhesive to directly bond the test column to the surface of the coating.
3. After the adhesive is cured, place the bonded test combination on a suitable tensile testing machine. The bonded test combination undergoes a controlled tensile test (pull-apart test) to measure the tensile force required to destroy the adhesion between the coating/substrate.
4. The test results are expressed by the tensile force between the failure interfaces (adhesion failure) or the tension force of self-destruction (cohesive failure). Adhesion/cohesive failure may occur at the same time.
