Heat transfer in porous moisture-containing materials involves a complex combination of different heat transfer mechanisms, including: radiation, heat conduction in solids and gases, convection (under certain service conditions), mass transfer (within the moisture-containing material), and the interactions between them.
The steady-state heat transfer test of moisture-containing building materials can use a protective hot plate or heat flow meter device to measure the heat transfer rate of moisture-containing materials under steady-state moisture conditions (that is, not affected by moisture migration) at temperatures above 0°C. The heat transfer rate of moisture-containing materials is a function of the moisture content. Combined with the data on the moisture distribution within the material, the actual thermal performance of the material can be estimated.
